Jules Goux, French Grand Prix 1922

Photographer Unknown

VP 143

A dramatic picture of Jules Goux driving his Ballot 2LS in the 1922 French Grand Prix. He crashed on the 31st lap. Goux was a fiercely competitive driver, and famously won the 1913 Indy 500, attributing his success to drinking four bottles of Champagne during the race. The 'lean' of the car is caused by the camera's slit shutter, which travelled vertically, capturing the top of the wheels fractionally later than the bottom.
