Barnard Castle and County Bridge, circa 1890

Elijah Yeoman

YB 001

This rather romantic view of the County Bridge with the castle in the background disguises the fact that this area of Barnard Castle was, at the time, a desperately overcrowded and unsantitary part of the town. Sadly, its continued neglect led to the wholesale demolition of most of the buildings to the right of the bridge in the late 1950s.
