Sandsend Viaduct, nr Whitby, circa 1890

Elijah Yeoman

YB 003

Surely one of Yeoman's finest images, this photograph shows the newly-constructed viaduct at Sandsend, with the toy-like train waiting while the exposure is made. The foreground figure is likely to be the viaduct's engineer, since a number of Yeoman's photographs of railway viaducts include figures similalrly posed. They were almost certainly produced as a record for the railway companies.
