Abbey Bridge near Barnard Castle, circa 1890

Elijah Yeoman

YB 032

Until the late 1950s Abbey Bridge, which crosses the Tees as it narrows through a rocky gorge, was a toll bridge with gates at either end. The elegant arch was painted by Turner, and here looks spectacular in the depths of winter. Sadly it is now on the main route for HGVs through Barnard Castle, and suffers frequent damage.
