Toll House, Abbey Bridge, circa 1890

Elijah Yeoman

YB 039

In use until the late 1950s, this tiny toll house straddled the Abbey Bridge, near Barnard Castle, the family living on one side of the bridge and sleeping on the other. To supplement their no doubt meagre income, they also ran a small tea shop which can be seen on the extreme left. The toll houses were later demolished to anable easier access for modern traffic, and only their foundations now remain.
