Barnard Castle, Market Place, circa 1900

Elijah Yeoman

YB 089

This image of the market place after a rain shower shows the town typically deserted, as it was on most days except market day. This remarkably detailed photograph shows the wide variety of shop fronts, many of which still have the decorative wrought iron detailing above the ground floor windows, once a unique characteristic of the town.
